Chiefly letters (1927-1930) from Nellie Hall Johnson (Mrs. Joseph Henry Johnson), of Talladega, Ala., to her son, Seaborn Johnson, while he was a student at Alabama Polytechnic Institute and elsewhere; together with correspondence, legal and financial papers, student papers from the University of Alabama, and printed material, of three generations of the Johnson family in Alabama and Georgia. Topics include Cave Spring, Ga., Hollins College, and slave sales. Persons represented include Abner Darden, Joseph Henry Johnson, and the Asbury and Darden families.

Hollins College, a women's liberal arts college, was founded as the coeducational Valley Union Seminary in Roanoke, North Carolina in 1842. In 1854, it became Virginia's first women's college changing its name to Hollins Institute three years later. It was renamed Hollins College in 1911 and Hollins University in 1998.
